Why?

This is Marie--named by Emmi. Can anyone tell me why the previous owner put a plastic egg in the nesting box?

  1. I can! There are two reasons. One is some chickens crack and eat their own eggs; if you have plastic eggs, they peck on them until they get discouraged and give up their bad habit. Second reason (that I just learned the other day) is that it encourages free range chickens to lay their eggs in the proper place, because they like to have clutch of eggs. I just bought fake eggs at the feed store because it's like an egg hunt everyday to find our eggs!

one other reason is if the plastic egg goes missing you know a snake ate it. Some do this if there is a "missing egg" dilemma. ~Trina
