Why are there no presents under the tree?

A couple of years ago, I overheard a little boy bragging at church. He was boasting over how many presents he had under the Christmas tree, and how he had more, and bigger gifts than his sister. We have probably all done that as a kid, some do it quite frequently as adults (comparing their possesions to their neighbors). It just really struck me on that particular day, that "WOW, I do not want to hear my kids talk like that."

Maybe it was because of the family he came from, very perfect on the outside,
"Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. " Matthew 23:25

"And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. " Luke 12:15
That year I stopped putting presents under the tree, just one little way to honor Christ at Christmas, so it would never be a competition for gifts amongst the kids.
I wrap up their gifts, usually 3, and keep them in my bedroom or closet until just a couple of days before Christmas.
Just one of the little things, that goes so far, in helping us to keep our minds on the true celebration of Christmas.

  1. I love your gold "tree" with the pretty ornaments.

You are a great momma Janet!

  2. Gifts for our kids are usually stuff they need because they are growing so fast! And, of course, a little makeup :)

  3. I'm with you 100%. We aren't giving gifts to our kids this year. They will get a small stocking on Christmas morning and that's it. We all need to stop and remember who we are serving and what we are celebrating. Love this post! Lisa~
